My Story
I grew up in a small apartment in Chicago, where “backyard” meant a few pots of basil on the windowsill. Even then, I craved greenery. Years later, as I pursued a degree in Urban Design, I began to see how city life and lush plant life didn’t have to be opposites.
In my early career, I worked on large-scale urban renewal projects, but my heart always returned to the question: How can everyday people bring nature into their homes, no matter the size? This question led me to create Vertgar.com — a space where vertical gardening meets creativity and sustainable design.
The Turning Point
It was during a trip to Barcelona that I first saw an entire building covered in a living wall of plants. The scent, the textures, the way it softened the city’s edges — it stopped me in my tracks. I remember thinking, Why can’t this be the norm in our neighborhoods?
That moment pushed me to pivot from corporate design to personal-scale projects, helping urban dwellers turn balconies, walls, and corners into lush escapes.
What I Learned the Hard Way
In the beginning, I underestimated how much ongoing care a vertical garden requires. I designed beautiful spaces that, sadly, didn’t last because I hadn’t planned for long-term maintenance. It taught me that sustainable beauty comes from both aesthetics and practical upkeep.
Another hard truth: not every plant loves vertical living. Trial, error, and a few stubborn ferns taught me the importance of plant choice.
My Approach Now
Today, my designs are as functional as they are beautiful. Every vertical garden I create balances the client’s style with plant needs, irrigation solutions, and maintenance plans that actually work. I use space-smart techniques, recycled materials, and drought-tolerant plants whenever possible.
